"How's the Pressure?"
Have you ever walked away from a massage feeling like you just stepped out of the ring with Ali? Or left feeling like you need another massage because you barely felt the one you just had? We massage therapists tend to be intuitive folks, but our clients' direct feedback while on the table is the best way to ensure you get the results you desire.
While we do not wish to interrupt your healing massage session by asking a lot of questions, one we must ask at least once during your session (until we get to know you and your body well after a few sessions) is, “How is the pressure?” We often get a simple answer in return such as “perfect!”, “ahhh, just right” or a blissful grin. These responses are easy to work with because clearly things are going well. But at times the answers can be “It’s ok”, “That’s fine”, “Ok, I guess(?)”.
Little do these clients know that, by offering such answers, they can be making or breaking their own experience with massage therapy and also their relationship with their massage therapist. Having a client walk away less than satisfied leaves us also feeling dissatisfied because we really do wish to give you the best massage you've ever had. Very seriously, we do. And we would genuinely like to understand how we can best help you. You will not hurt our feelings nor insult us by sharing your honest feedback at any time during your session.
Importantly, we are not Gold’s Gym. “No pain, no gain” is not in our philosophy. So for your sake and for your enjoyment, the massage environment is not one in which to be shy. Pretty please, with lavender oil on top, let us know if you are uncomfortable. We are very tuned in to your body’s responses to our touch. While we are trained to pick up on reactions, the very best way we can gauge your comfort is your verbal feedback.
So go ahead, tell us what you need! Is the room too cold? Does that Gregorian chanting music make you want to stick a pencil in your ear? Do you feel feathers on your back when you want the might of the Hulk pulling along your upper traps? Is your neck uncomfortable in that face rest? All things we can and will adjust for you. Simply give us the heads up so you can get the most out of your hard-earned massage session.
